Indigenous rights take center stage in marine protected areas governance.
Marine protected areas are important for protecting the oceans and can also help recognize and support Indigenous rights. However, there is not much focus on involving Indigenous peoples in managing these areas. Studies show that Indigenous-led MPAs emphasize cultural goals, while state-led ones focus more on ecological goals. Success in achieving cultural goals is common, but social issues are a challenge. More work is needed to make sure MPAs can both conserve biodiversity and respect Indigenous rights.
