New drought-tolerant maize hybrids set to boost food security in Africa!
The researchers studied different types of maize to find hybrids that can grow well in dry conditions. They tested 120 hybrids in Nigeria for two years, comparing how they grew in drought and normal conditions. They found that some hybrids performed better than others, with six being especially good. The best hybrid, TZEEI 102 × TZEEI 95, produced 43.70% more grain than the regular maize variety. Overall, the hybrids were 54.90% less productive in drought conditions compared to normal conditions. The hybrids TZEEI 81 × TZEE1 79, TZEEI 100 × TZEEI 63, and TZEEI 64 × TZEEI 79 were the most productive and stable across different environments. These hybrids could help improve food security and income in Africa.
