Plant diversity in grasslands is influenced by the types of plants that have previously grown in the soil. When multiple plant species have conditioned the soil, the plant community is more even. This means that different plant species have a more equal chance of thriving, leading to a more balanced ecosystem. The way in which the soil is conditioned, whether by one species or multiple species, has a bigger impact on plant diversity than how the conditioning is spread out in space. This research shows that the diversity of soil conditioning plays a key role in promoting plant evenness in grassland communities.
