Sand fences reshape dunes, altering sediment transport and coastal erosion.
Sand fences were studied on a beach in New Jersey to see how they affect sediment movement. The fences changed wind speeds and sediment transport on the dunes. They caused less sediment to move on the berm crest and backshore, but more on the upper ramp. During longshore winds, sediment transport was much higher. Fences can change the shape of the dunes and where sediment collects. Placing fences should consider these changes to the dunes.
