Loss of biodiversity threatens ecosystem functioning and delivery of essential services.
Loss of biodiversity can impact how ecosystems function and provide services. Two long-term experiments showed that while the effects of biodiversity loss on individual functions varied across ecosystems, the overall impact on multifunctionality was consistent. However, the effects of biodiversity loss on specific functions differed among ecosystems. This means that ecosystems with similar multifunctionality values may still have different effects of biodiversity loss on functioning. Understanding how different species contribute to ecosystem functions is crucial for managing ecosystems to maintain multifunctionality and provide multiple services.
