The article looks at how houses on soft ground settle differently. They studied over 200 houses near Suwa Lake and found that if the ground is strong (N-value of 3 or more), settlements are usually less than 60mm. But if the ground is weak (N-value less than 3), the type of foundation matters. Houses with continuous footings settle more than those with pine pile foundations. Most people don't notice settlements under 60mm.
