Subnational self-rule boosts voter participation in Latin America and Caribbean
Decentralization in Latin America and the Caribbean boosts voter participation in local elections. This study looks at how self-rule in subnational areas affects voting. Self-rule, where local units govern their own territory, increases voter turnout by promoting accountability. Fiscal aspects of self-rule don't impact participation as much as political aspects. However, shared-rule, where local units govern the whole country, doesn't have a significant effect on voting. The study analyzed data from 20 countries in the region in 2010 to reach these conclusions.
