Low-protein diets show promise in improving muscle health for kidney disease patients.
Patients with chronic kidney disease were studied to see how their muscle protein metabolism adapts to low-protein diets. The researchers found that a low-protein diet led to decreased muscle protein degradation and improved efficiency of protein turnover. A supplemented very low-protein diet further decreased negative net protein balance without affecting muscle protein degradation. This shows that muscle protein metabolism can adapt to restricted protein intake through changes in protein breakdown and recycling of amino acids.
