Banks adapt to low interest rates, reducing risk and boosting profits.
Banks in the Netherlands managed their interest rate risk well from 2008 to 2015, despite low interest rates. Most banks used hedging to reduce risk, but some had more risk than others. When interest rates were low, banks reduced their risk. Banks with less debt and those using derivatives had less risk. Banks that got help during the financial crisis had more interest rate risk.
