Tropical legumes boost maize yields threefold when left untouched.
Tropical forage legumes like lablab, centro, and butterfly pea can provide a lot of nitrogen to maize crops, boosting grain yield and N uptake. However, if you cut and remove the legume biomass for fodder, the benefits decrease significantly. Keeping the legume biomass can triple maize grain yield and add extra nitrogen to the soil. Centro is the only legume that still helps maize crops even after its biomass is removed. Burgundy bean doesn't really help with crop production, whether its biomass is retained or removed. So, keeping the legume biomass can be a good way to improve soil nitrogen levels and crop yields.
