Textual metaphor in Systemic Functional Linguistics is a hot topic. Some experts think it's crucial, while others say it's not that important. We looked at examples of textual metaphor in the literature and found five main issues: many examples don't clearly show the difference between different forms, some are hard to tell apart from other types of metaphors, nominalization is a big part of most textual metaphors, current methods of identifying them don't always work, and we haven't figured out what they're really for. This suggests that we might need to rethink or get rid of the term 'textual metaphor' in SFL.
