Massive water and soil conservation efforts in the high sediment areas of the Yellow River have led to a decrease in sediment and runoff over the past 50 years. Human activities played a significant role in reducing sediment, while rainfall changes also contributed to less runoff. Erosion control efforts have been successful, showing progress in water and soil loss control in the region.
