Soil tillage method impacts crop yield and soil health significantly.
The study compared different ways of preparing soil for planting crops in northwest Slavonia from 1997 to 2000. They looked at five methods: conventional tillage, reduced tillage, two types of conservation tillage, and a no-tillage system. The researchers found that the physical properties of the soil, like density and porosity, were not significantly different between tillage systems for winter wheat seasons. However, for soybean seasons, there were significant differences in these properties. Overall, the physical properties of the soil got worse in the order of conservation tillage II, conventional tillage, conservation tillage I, no-tillage, and reduced tillage. The highest soybean yield was under conventional tillage in the first year, but in the following years, the highest yields for both soybean and winter wheat were under conservation tillage II.
