Evergreen forests outperform deciduous in climate resilience and soil health
The study compared the microclimate and soil characteristics of evergreen coniferous and deciduous hardwood forests. They found that the leaf area index was different in July but similar after bud burst. Evergreen forests had higher litter production and accumulation on the forest floor. Organic matter content in the soil was higher in evergreen forests. Solar radiation and temperature varied between the two forest types. Daily temperature changes were similar to solar radiation. Relative humidity was higher in evergreen forests. Soil environment elements like organic matter and water holding capacity were higher in evergreen forests compared to deciduous forests.
