Intercropping boosts sugarcane yield and nutrient uptake in Konkan region.
Intercropping sugarcane with different crops and using paired row planting methods can increase yield and nutrient uptake in lateritic soil. In a study in the Konkan region, paired row planted sugarcane with green gram intercropping produced the highest cane yield, while sugarcane intercropped with sweet corn had the highest overall yield. This method was more profitable than conventional planting. Nutrient uptake was significant for nitrogen and potassium, with the highest uptake seen in paired row planted sugarcane with green gram intercropping. Overall, the study suggests that these methods can improve sugarcane production in the region.
