Nigeria's Clean Coal Boom: Unlocking Massive Energy Potential, Slashing Emissions
A study looked at using advanced clean coal technologies to make energy from coal in Nigeria. They focused on ten coal mines in the country holding a lot of coal. By comparing new technologies like Ultra-Supercritical Combustion, they found that better ways to burn coal could produce more electricity. The best method, USC, could give a 31% boost in power generation compared to the old way, known as subcritical pulverised fuel combustion. One coal mine called Amasiodo could provide the most power. This new technology also helps reduce CO2 emissions, with the USC method cutting them down by about 32% compared to the old method. Some coal types are better suited for clean energy production than others, showing the need for improving coal quality to get the most energy out of it.
