Invasive carp's hearing range redefined, paving way for better deterrents.
Bigheaded carp, invasive fish in the Midwest and Great Lakes, were studied to understand their hearing abilities for developing acoustic deterrents. The researchers tested silver and bighead carp's response to sounds from 100 Hz to 9 kHz. They found that both species have the best hearing at 500 Hz. This information helps fisheries managers create effective acoustic deterrents to control bigheaded carp populations.
