Discovery of key enzyme unlocks potential for sustainable plant degradation process
Chlorophyll a degradation in plants starts with removing magnesium, done by a protein called Stay-Green (SGR). SGR doesn't touch chlorophyll b, which needs to turn into chlorophyll a before breaking down. Non-Yellow Coloring 1 (NYC1) helps with this conversion. When SGR is boosted in Arabidopsis plants, both chlorophyll types break down. Without NYC1, chlorophyll b doesn't degrade properly. This shows that SGR triggers chlorophyll b breakdown by increasing NYC1 levels. This process helps regulate plant metabolism effectively.
