Nutrient loading in Hai River Estuary threatens Bohai Bay ecosystem.
The study looked at how oxygen levels and nutrients affect phosphorus in the sediment and water of the Hai River Estuary in China. They found that oxygen levels were linked to certain types of nutrients in the water, but not in low-oxygen conditions. Changes in nutrient levels caused phosphorus to shift between sediment and water. Iron/aluminum-bound phosphorus changed the most, while calcium-bound and organic phosphorus stayed more stable. This research helps us understand how phosphorus moves between sediment and water, which can help protect Bohai Bay.
