The article discusses how countries can reduce emissions without just moving them elsewhere through trade. It introduces a new way to measure this called the technology adjusted balance of emissions in trade. The study looked at Sweden and the UK from 1995 to 2009 and found that both countries have been able to decrease emissions while still growing economically. Surprisingly, Sweden's exports actually reduce emissions in other countries more than its imports generate. However, both countries have been importing more carbon-intensive products and exporting less carbon-intensive ones over time.
