New study reveals mites as key indicators of past permafrost dynamics.
Oribatid mites can help us understand past permafrost changes in sub-Arctic peatlands. By studying mite remains in peat profiles from Finland and Russia, researchers identified specific mite species that indicate past permafrost presence. Carabodes labyrinthicus, Chamobates borealis, and Neoribates aurantiacus are key indicator species. Neoribates aurantiacus is linked to lichen presence, which is helpful as lichen remains are rarely found in peat. This study confirms that oribatid mites are reliable indicators of past environmental changes.
