Soil amendments reduce toxic metals in wheat, making food safer.
Soil amendments like potassium dihydrogen phosphate and chicken manure can help reduce the levels of harmful cadmium and lead in calcareous soil. By changing the soil pH, these amendments can transform the forms of cadmium and lead, making them less available to plants like wheat. This study found that applying these soil amendments at specific rates decreased the levels of cadmium and lead in wheat grain, making them safer for consumption.
