Mixing grass and clover boosts pasture productivity and nitrogen transfer.
The study looked at how grass and clover interact in dairy pastures to see if adjustments to a forage value index were needed. They found that pastures with mid-season heading ryegrass had more clover than those with late heading ryegrass. Mixtures of grass and clover produced more dry matter than just grass alone. Clover also transferred nitrogen to the grass, helping with pasture productivity. Overall, the study showed that the forage value index does not need to be changed to account for grass-clover interactions.
