Intercropping maize and soybeans boosts yields and profits in Cameroon.
Intercropping maize and soybeans at specific plant densities can increase yield and profitability. In a field experiment in Cameroon, planting maize at 53,320 plants/ha with soybeans at 200,000 plants/ha resulted in the highest number of pods, pod weight, number of grains, and grain weight per pod. This intercropping combination showed a yield advantage of 25-80% in unfertilized soil and 33-96% in fertilized soil. Overall, intercropping maize and soybeans at these densities was more profitable than growing them separately.
