Cryogenic Treatment Boosts Tool Life for Cutting Industry Efficiency
The researchers studied how treating tungsten carbide cutting tools with deep cryogenic treatment affects their wear resistance. They compared treated and untreated inserts in turning tests on cast iron and steel. The cryogenically treated inserts showed better resistance to wear on both materials, with less flank wear and nose wear. This improvement was due to changes in the cobalt binder's microstructure.
