Climate change causing Qinghai Lake to shrink and expand dramatically since 1980s.
The largest lake on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, Qinghai Lake, has changed in size over the past few decades due to climate change. Using satellite images and weather data, researchers found that the lake shrank by about 2% from 1987 to 2005, then grew by about 3% from 2005 to 2016. The average temperature in the region has been increasing, with a faster rise in recent years. The study suggests that changes in precipitation are the main factor affecting the lake's size, with temperature indirectly influencing it through effects on snow, evaporation, and more. This research shows how global warming has significantly altered the area of water bodies on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau since the 1980s.
