Drought-tolerant wheat varieties show promise for global food security.
Abiotic stresses like drought are a big problem for wheat production worldwide, including in Hungary. A study tested 29 wheat varieties in a greenhouse to see how they handle drought. They found that some varieties had a big decrease in grain yield under drought conditions, while others did better. Varieties with higher harvest index did well under drought. Varieties with more root mass took longer to mature. Three varieties were identified as high-yielding under drought conditions.
