New grassland mixtures boost productivity and sustainability for farmers.
Temporary grasslands in Europe usually have low plant diversity, but adding non-leguminous dicot forage herbs like chicory, plantain, and caraway can help. Another method gaining interest is growing only forage legumes for high-protein biomass. Including forbs in grass-clover mixtures or growing only legumes can lead to highly productive swards with up to 17 tons of dry matter per hectare. The forbs had different effects on sward productivity, with plantain and chicory being more competitive than caraway. However, all three forbs showed similar levels of nitrogen fixation. Overall, including forbs in grass-clover mixtures or growing only legumes did not significantly affect nitrogen fixation or sward productivity.
