New model predicts bending stiffness for wire ropes and electrical conductors.
A model was developed to predict how flexible strands like wire ropes bend when pulled and twisted. The model looks at how the strands slide against each other and how this affects their stiffness. By testing the model in experiments, it was found that the predicted bending stiffness matched well with the actual measurements. This means the model is accurate in predicting how these strands behave when bent under constant curvature.
