New wastewater treatment system removes nitrogen and COD with high efficiency!
Researchers studied two systems of packed bed columns to clean wastewater with high nitrogen and COD levels. One system had anoxic conditions throughout, while the other switched from anoxic to oxic. The anoxic-anoxic system removed 99.2-100% of nitrogen and 97.2-98.8% of COD, with removal rates of 6.70 kg N/m3 x d and 26.02 kg COD/m3 x d. The anoxic-oxic system removed 97.5-100% of nitrogen and 98.6-99.4% of COD, with removal rates of 7.41 kg N/m3 x d and 28.00 kg COD/m3 x d. The anoxic-anoxic system was more stable for denitrification, but the anoxic-oxic system showed higher overall removal rates.
