New rice study reveals key traits for higher yields in salt affected soil.
The researchers studied how different traits in rice plants affect grain yield in salty soil. They grew 60 hybrid rice plants and 20 parent plants in a field in 2015. They found that traits like leaf size, number of tillers, and panicle length were important for high grain yield. The study showed that biological yield and harvest index were the most important traits directly affecting grain yield. Other traits like grains per panicle and spikelet fertility also indirectly influenced grain yield. By selecting plants with these key traits, farmers can increase rice production in salty soil.
