Coastal salt marshes at risk of disappearing due to rising sea levels.
Salt marshes are important coastal habitats that are at risk of disappearing due to rising sea levels. A study of a New England salt marsh from 1979 to 2015 showed that increased submergence and erosion are leading to habitat losses. If sea levels continue to rise at current rates, the entire ecosystem could vanish by the next century. Globally, 40 to 95% of salt marshes may be submerged by the end of this century.
