Cascade reservoirs alleviate nutrient imbalance, reducing algal blooms downstream.
The study looked at how building reservoirs can affect the balance of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus in rivers. Reservoirs tend to keep more phosphorus than nitrogen, leading to a shortage of phosphorus downstream. However, the researchers found that human activities are adding more phosphorus back into the water, which helps balance out the nutrients. This means that building reservoirs doesn't always cause a lack of phosphorus downstream.
