Dam construction leads to retreat of river mouth in Greek fan delta.
The Mornos river fan delta in Greece has changed in the last two centuries due to natural processes and human activities. A dam built in 1980 reduced sediment flow downstream, slowing the growth of the delta. The eastern distributary of the river has been abandoned, causing the river mouth to retreat by 120 meters. The western distributary has been growing at a rate of 4 meters per year between 1945 and 1986, but has not changed much since then. The researchers also looked at how future sea-level rise could affect the fan delta.
