Adjusting cropping patterns can save crops during drought in Pakistan.
Soil water content plays a crucial role in crop productivity in arid regions. By studying different cropping patterns in varying rainfall areas of Punjab, Pakistan, researchers found that adjusting cropping patterns based on soil water availability can improve yields. Terracing and soil conservation measures can help maintain soil water content, especially in areas with higher crop water requirements. Medium rainfall sites generally have more plant water availability compared to high and low rainfall sites. Growing low water requirement crops in summer seasons can help cope with drought periods and sustain agriculture in rainfed climatic conditions.
