The researchers re-analyzed data from patients with and without colitis using new genome sequencing techniques. They found two new types of bacteria that may be linked to colitis, in addition to one previously known type. These new bacteria were more strongly associated with colitis severity than the previously known type. Surprisingly, some conclusions from a previous study were not supported by the new analysis. This study shows the importance of re-analyzing data and using updated tools in studying bacteria in the gut.
