Ground cover key to reducing soil erosion on China's Loess Plateau
Vegetation types and rainfall patterns affect soil erosion on steep slopes of the Loess Plateau in China. Grasslands and shrublands with high ground cover reduce runoff and soil loss compared to forestlands with poor ground cover. Rainfall events with high intensity and short duration cause more runoff and soil loss under all vegetation types. Ground cover is crucial for controlling soil and water loss, with vegetation measures that have high ground cover recommended for soil erosion control on the Loess Plateau.
