New study shows breeding for efficiency in cattle could reduce feed consumption
The study aimed to understand how genetics influence the amount of food cattle eat, their weight gain, and how efficiently they convert food into growth. Researchers analyzed data from over 2,000 Nellore cattle to estimate heritability and genetic correlations. They found that weight gain and feed efficiency are moderately heritable traits, meaning they can be passed down from parents to offspring. The study also revealed a negative relationship between weight gain and feed conversion ratio, and a positive relationship between food intake and residual feed intake. This suggests that selecting cattle with better feed efficiency could help reduce food consumption without sacrificing performance.
