Sorghum outperforms maize in water efficiency and biomass production.
The study compared sorghum and maize plants in Central Europe to see which one is better for producing forage in areas with not enough rain. They measured how much water the plants used and how much biomass they made from 2010 to 2012. In a dry year, sorghum used more water than maize. Maize consistently made more above-ground biomass than sorghum each year. Sorghum had similar or better water use efficiency than maize, but that didn't make it produce more biomass.
