Korean Bamboo Species Hold Key to Sustainable Biomass Revolution
Bamboo is an important resource worldwide, including in Korea. Three Korean bamboo species were studied to understand their anatomy. The researchers used microscopes and X-ray diffraction to look at the structures and crystalline properties of the bamboo. They found that all three species had a specific type of vascular bundle and longer fibers in the outer part of the culm. Phyllostachys bambusoides had the longest fibers. Phyllostachys pubescens had the largest vessel and parenchyma diameter. The crystallinity and crystallite width were higher in the outer part of the culm, with Phyllostachys bambusoides having the highest values.
