Intercropping with Turnip Boosts Sweet Maize Forage Quality for Livestock
Intercropping sweet maize with turnip or oat can improve the quality of maize stover used for livestock feed in the winter. The study found that adding turnip to the maize increased the digestibility of the stover, making it more nutritious for animals. This led to higher animal gains compared to using maize alone. Turnip also had higher crude protein levels than oat, further enhancing the stover's nutritional value. Overall, intercropping sweet maize with turnip or oat is a viable method for enhancing the quality of winter forage for livestock.
