Limited fresh groundwater in Zeeland, Netherlands prompts urgent conservation efforts.
Seawater intrusion has reduced fresh groundwater in Zeeland, Netherlands. Scientists used airborne electromagnetics to map groundwater salinity. They created a detailed 3D model showing limited fresh groundwater, mainly in dune areas and sandy ridges. Fresh groundwater was found below saline water, protected by clay layers. Uncertainty in the results was highest at transition zones between fresh and saline water. This study helps manage fresh groundwater in Zeeland by providing accurate information to stakeholders.
