Soil slope failures caused by snowmelt are a common issue in Hokkaido, Japan. Current warning criteria don't consider snowmelt water, so researchers developed a new method. By adding snowmelt water to rainfall data, they created the Effective Precipitation index. This new index accurately predicts snowmelt-induced soil slope failures.
