New study improves flood predictions, enhancing safety and preparedness.
Severe flooding in Rhode Island in 2010 led to the updating of hydraulic models for river reaches in the Pawtuxet River Basin. The models were improved using new data and simulations to better predict water levels during floods. Comparing the updated models to actual high-water marks from the 2010 flood showed that the new models were more accurate than previous flood insurance studies. This means that the updated models provide a better representation of flooding at different levels of probability than the old models.
