Soil salinity accurately assessed with field capacity soil solution extraction.
The study compared soil solutions extracted at field capacity and saturation-paste to assess soil salinity. Soil solutions from 22 soils in a plastic film house and 18 soils in reclaimed land were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, cations, and anions. Results showed that cations and anions from field capacity soil solutions were similar to those from saturation-paste, except for one ion in reclaimed land. The relationship between electrical conductivity and soil water retention varied based on soil texture. Sandier soils had higher slopes in the relationship between two variables. Soil texture and other properties affecting soil moisture should be considered when determining electrical conductivity.
