The fisheries management system in Malawi has changed over time, with a shift towards a participatory approach in Lake Malombe. This change was prompted by declining fish catches due to factors like overfishing and environmental damage. A new co-management program involving local committees and the Fisheries Department was introduced in 1993 to address these challenges. This program aims to improve fishery management by involving local communities in decision-making.
