Gabon timber companies struggle with worker well-being in sustainable forest management.
Sustainable forest management in Gabon was assessed using principles, criteria, and indicators from the African Timber Organization. Audits conducted between 2012 and 2014 revealed that maintaining the well-being of workers and local populations was the most challenging aspect for timber companies. However, companies had fewer issues with maintaining ecological functions. Some companies struggled with implementing management plans, highlighting the importance of independent forest certification for successful sustainable forest management.
