Dynamic word networks in mental lexicon shape foreign language learning.
Memory plays a crucial role in how we understand and use language. In our minds, words are organized in a structured network called mental lexicon. A study used a Word Association Test to explore how foreign language learners organize words in their minds. The test asked students to say the first word that came to mind when given a stimulus word. The results showed that non-native speakers tend to connect words based on how they are used together in phrases, known as collocations. Interestingly, the study also found that the organization of words in the mental lexicon changes over time based on the learners' experiences and perceptions.
