Extreme weather kills thousands in India, disproportionately impacting men and the elderly.
The study looked at deaths in India from extreme weather events between 2001 and 2014. They found that 25% of accidental deaths were due to extreme weather. Deaths from extreme precipitation and tropical cyclones decreased, while deaths from lightning and extreme temperatures increased. Most deaths were caused by lightning, followed by extreme precipitation and temperature. The central part of India had the highest death toll. Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal were the most affected states. More males and older people died from extreme weather events. People seem to adapt better to cold waves and cyclones than to heat waves and extreme precipitation. Raising awareness and having a community alert system could help reduce deaths from extreme weather.
