Plant roots impact soil water retention and conductivity in mixed planting.
Plant roots affect how water moves through soil, but we don't know much about this when there are different plant species. Researchers studied how roots change the way water moves through sandy soil. They found that when there is only one type of plant, the soil becomes less able to hold water and water moves through it more slowly. But when different plants are together, the opposite happens: the soil can hold more water and water moves through it faster.
